COMMERCIAL ASSESSMENT · JULY 2026
Charlton Athletic FC
A levelUP® digital commercial assessment quantifying the cost of inaction and identifying the potential to close the gap.
SECTION 00 — INTRO
INTRO
levelUP® offers commercial support to ambitious clubs. The following is an assessment of Charlton Athletic FC's commercial potential with a specific focus on digital sponsorship optimisation, which we have identified as a significant revenue stream based on our analysis of the men's Championship position, Charlton Athletic Women's promotion to WSL, The Valley as a content environment, and the existing club partnerships.
SECTION 01 — WHERE YOU CURRENTLY SIT
STATUS QUO
Estimated annual digital opportunity cost
£815k–£1.55m
This is what Charlton Athletic FC are leaving on the table every season by not commercialising digital inventory across the men's and women's teams, digital channels and The Valley venue. The assessment highlights the gaps, identifies the potential, and recommends work streams to bridge them in collaboration with existing staff.
Charlton Athletic enter 2026/27 at the most commercially significant moment in a decade with a second consecutive Championship season for the men's team, stable average home crowds of 20k+, Charlton Athletic Women's promotion to the Women's Super League, ongoing investment & redevelopment of The Valley, and RSK Group as the sole principal shirt sponsor. Solid audience and engagement on club digital channels also add to this position with fans interacting with the club across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook regularly.
However, the commercial development of the club is not being matched across their digital audiences. Digital assets are not being packaged, measured or sold as meaningful commercial products. The RSK Group shirt deal is framed as a sustainability partnership rather than a measurable media product. The University of Greenwich away shirt has no digital extension. Charlton Athletic Women's WSL promotion has no dedicated digital partner, and The Valley's redevelopment story sits without a content series or presenting sponsor. The gap between digital performance and commercial income is the entire opportunity this assessment is designed to identify and close.
What exists vs. what is being sold
CURRENT DIGITAL ASSET AUDIT
The following table maps Charlton Athletic FC's existing digital assets against whether they are currently structured as commercial products. The gap between column 2 and column 3 is the opportunity.
| Digital asset | Exists? | Sold commercially? | Current status & gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram (@cafcofficial) | Yes: 133K followers / 11K posts | Ad hoc only | 133K is strong for Championship. The content is active and well-produced ("The Addicks, Est. 1905, etc). yet no club sponsor receives visible post frequency, unlike EFL sponsors who receive their contracted deliverables. Potentially the most valuable social asset, yet its commercial packaging is informal at best. |
| TikTok (@cafcofficial) | Yes: 111.8K followers / 1.9M likes | No | 1.9M likes on a 111.8K account indicates a high engagement rate per piece of content so it's abundantly clear that the content is genuinely resonating with fans. However, no sponsor receives any visible contracted deliverable. The most immediately sellable & unexploited asset; a TikTok presenting partner at this profile could command a 6-figure fee. |
| Facebook (Official page) | Yes: 17k likes / 2k talking about | No | Below IG/TikTok scale but valuable in a multi-platform bundle targeting an older demographic of fan. 2k+ currently talking about the page is a high engagement ratio for a page of that size. |
| Website (cafc.co.uk) | Yes | No | 200k+ monthly visitors is strong for the Championship. Partner page links away to own websites. Display ads are visible yet the inventory seems to be used by the club to promote own products or EFL sponsors (Jamesons) via contracted deliverables. A unique opportunity to extend available sponsor inventory & package value being missed currently. |
| RSK Group (sole shirt sponsor) | Yes: sole front-of-shirt 2025/26+ | Physical + sustainability, limited visible digital assets | Club partnership since 2022, and currently framed publicly as a sustainability partnership (solar panels at The Valley). Monthly digital reach reporting, quarterly audience data and a sustainability content series would convert the deal from values-led to values-plus-media, materially lifting renewal value. |
| University of Greenwich (away shirt) | Yes: long-standing away shirt partner | Physical only | SE10 university with 20k+ students, geographically adjacent to Charlton's SE7 home offers a natural community brand alignment. But with no digital extension to a digitally-savvy audience. Currently minimal social content targeting the 18–25 demographic, no student audience profile data, no co-produced content. The most digitally underdeveloped existing partnership. |
| Charlton Athletic Women (WSL 2026/27) | Yes: promoted to WSL | No dedicated digital partner | WSL campaign (26/27) with home fixtures planned at The Valley. A dedicated digital partner (6-figure fee) with first-mover pricing in the debut WSL season is the single largest new digitally-led commercial opportunity available. |
| CharltonTV (streaming platform) | Yes: live stream + VOD, subscriber base | Subscription income, no sponsor | International supporters + domestic highlights. No sponsor presents CharltonTV or its content. A CharltonTV presenting partner integrated into video content is an immediately buildable product. |
| The Valley (27,111 capacity, lease to 2040) | Yes: £3m+ invested 2022–2026 | Physical signage, no digital companion | The redevelopment story has not been packaged as digital content. A stadium-development presenting sponsor ("Building the Valley's Future, presented by [Brand]") is a distinct commercial product. |
| Charlton Athletic Academy | Yes: elite academy pathway | Physical sponsorship packages listed | Described by the club as one of the most prestigious youth academies in the country, producing players for elite clubs worldwide. A structured Academy digital partner (monthly content, player pathway stories, talent-development features) is an viable digital product which youth-focused brands would crave. |
BENCHMARK: WHERE CHARLTON ATHLETIC FC SITS VS. COMPARISON CLUBS
Comparison clubs selected across Championship digital operators and the WSL for what they reveal about the gap between Charlton Athletic's current digital commercial position and what their assets should demand.
| Club / tier | Digital spon. % | Key digital asset | What Charlton Athletic FC can learn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coventry City (Championship) | 30–40% | Monzo front-of-shirt: social-first campaign contracted into the deal (TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook); fan CRM cashback and loyalty; digital activation as the primary deliverable, not an add-on. | The Championship benchmark. Monzo paid a material premium because digital deliverables were built into the deal at signature. RSK Group's shirt deal should be re-structured identically at renewal offering contracted social deliverables, audience data and a sustainability content series. The values alignment (RSK sustainability / Charlton community) is stronger than Coventry/Monzo; but the digital structure is weaker. |
| Bristol City (Championship) | 18–24% | Strong local Bristol corporate sponsor base with digital deliverables contractually defined across all major partners. Fan CRM-linked email product for sponsors. | Frequently cited as Championship best practice for structured digital deliverables across the full partner portfolio. The lesson to learn from better placed peers is that every deal at every tier should carry a contracted digital component as a line item, not as an informal add-on. |
| Millwall FC (Championship) | 8–15% | SE London identity packaged as a commercial product: Den Audience Intelligence for property and financial services brands; matchday digital wrapper across every home fixture. | Charlton and Millwall share similar geographies, both drawing from SE5, SE7, SE10, SE14, SE16 and adjacent postcodes. The identical SE London audience intelligence product is available to Charlton given its larger attendance base and stronger social scale. |
| Arsenal Women (WSL) | 40–60% (est.) | Dedicated women's shirt sponsor separate from the men's deal. Own content studio producing women's-specific content. | The WSL benchmark. Charlton Women as a promoted first-year WSL club don't need to match Arsenal's scale immediately, but the direction is clear: dedicated women's digital partner, separate content, separate commercial identity. |
| Charlton Athletic FC (Championship, current) | ~12–18% (est.) | RSK Group shirt (values-led, not digitally measured); strong digital audiences not being monetised; Charlton Women WSL with no dedicated digital partner; The Valley redevelopment with no content series. | Baseline. The assets are stronger than the commercial architecture around them. TikTok engagement (1.9M likes on 111.8K followers) is an above-average ratio, and RSK Group would see value from an extended deal which reaches both local and international audiences. |
ESTIMATED ANNUAL DIGITAL OPPORTUNITY COST
The opportunity cost above is not primarily about selling new products. It is also about re-framing what Charlton Athletic already sells. The RSK Group front-of-shirt deal, the University of Greenwich away shirt and the Charlton Athletic Women's WSL campaign all present commercial relationships or opportunities that currently have limited defined digital deliverables, therefore are not maximising commercial value. The question is whether currently those digital assets are priced as media assets (with measurable reach, audience data and contracted deliverables) or as complimentary add-ons to a physical placement. The difference in deal value between the two approaches is the foregone revenue opportunity.
*This figure encompasses three components: (a) the estimated value of digital deliverables that current partners are not receiving and therefore not paying for; (b) the revenue from entirely new digital-only products that do not currently exist in Charlton Athletic's commercial offering; and (c) the re-pricing uplift achievable on the existing partner portfolio if structured digital products were built and sold systematically. It does not include the compound value of Premier League promotion (which would represent a step-change).

Indicative estimate only. Based on creating packages across the above categories, incremental on estimated current digital income.
In summary
A fully activated digital commercial programme could generate £815k–£1.55m of additional annual revenue for Charlton Athletic FC, from zero new infrastructure investment, using only existing channels, existing audience, and existing partner relationships repackaged with structure and measurability.
CONCLUSION
OUR FINDINGS
The above is an assessment of intel which we have found in the public domain, and could obviously vary from the sponsor agreements in place currently or any renewal conversations.
It is obvious that Charlton Athletic have built one of the Championship's most distinctive digital audiences, anchored by a 111.8K-follower TikTok generating 1.9M likes and a deeply loyal SE London matchday community of 20,066/game. This, alongside a values-led RSK Group sole shirt deal and Charlton Athletic Women's WSL promotion, creates a commercial window that is both timely and urgent. Every season without a structured digital sponsorship architecture (contracted deliverables, audience data products, fan CRM) is a season in which that window narrows, Championship competitors (Coventry, Bristol City, Derby) build their own, and the RSK Group, University of Greenwich and Women's WSL partnerships renew at logo prices rather than media-asset prices. In our view, the cost of inaction is not standing still, it is falling behind where the club's ambition lies. And with Premier League qualification a goal for the medium term, the need to maximise revenue in the short-term is greater than ever.
